three translations i did of lamp-offering prayers from the Tibetan and a dedication prayer from Shantideva’s extraordinary classic, Bodhicharyavatara, ‘Entering the Practice Path of the the Enlightened’:
These lamps that dispel the mental darkness of the infinite sentient beings,
a vast offering cloud of hundreds of millions of desirable objects,
I now present to the buddhas and their offspring throughout the three times.
May I and all others never be separated from the Great Compassionate Lord.
OM MANI PEME HUNG HRIH OM MANI PEME HUNG HRIH OM MANI PEME HUNG HRIH OM MANI PEME HUNG HRIH OM MANI PEME HUNG HRIH OM MANI PEME HUNG HRIH
~Trulshig Rinpoche.
These brilliant lamps of primordially pure awareness
I offer to the Vidyadhara Lord Who was Born from a Lotus and to all his mandala.
May all transient sentient beings, wherever awareness reaches throughout the infinite reaches of space,
attain the dharmakaya level of awareness-emptiness.
~Mipham Rin[poche
OM AH HUNG
In the bowls of these precious lamps, the charming continuum of beauty
perfectly filled with melted butter, quintessence of all that is pure,
stand perfectly blazing wicks, soft and upright,
an offering of brilliant lamps to dispel all darkness.
These I offer to the all-pervading Spiritual Master, to the Three Rare and Sublime Jewels and the Three Roots
and to the entire infinite ocean of objects of refuge.
Though the eye of primordial awareness has no notion of bright or dark,
once the twofold veil of ignorance has been perfectly cleared away,
may I and all sentient beings, as many as space is vast,
obtain the supreme and perfectly pure eye of penetrating insight.
In response to a request by the nun Namdröl Wangmo, this was written by ‘Jigdral Yeshe Dorje.
Shantideva’s Dedication from the Bodhicharyavatara
By virtue of my merit,
may all beings everywhere,
plagued by sufferings of body and mind,
obtain an ocean of happiness and joy.
May no living creature suffer,
commit evil or ever fall ill.
May no one be afraid or belittled
or have a mind weighed down by depression.
May the blind see forms
and the deaf hear sounds.
May those whose bodies are worn with toil
be restored on finding repose.
May the naked find clothing,
the hungry find food,
and the thirsty find water
and delicious drinks.
May the poor find wealth,
those weak with sorrow find joy
and may the forlorn find hope,
constant happiness and prosperity.
May there be timely rains
and bountiful harvests.
May all medicines be effective
and wholesome prayers bear fruit.
May all who are sick and unwell
swiftly be freed from their ailments.
Whatever diseases there are in the world,
may they never occur again.
May the frightened cease to be afraid
and those in bonds be freed.
May the powerless find power
and may people think of benefiting each other.
For as long as space remains,
for as long as sentient beings remain,
until then, may I too remain
to dispel the misery of the world.
